Founded in 1979, Smith Fence Company began in rural Riverside, California with one goal: deliver high-quality fences at affordable prices. Reginald Smith came to America from England with little more than the shirt on his back and built a respected business based on honesty, craftsmanship, and hard work.

After gaining experience with local fence companies, Reginald launched Smith Fence Company—and his commitment to superior work quickly gained a following in the Riverside and San Diego areas.

A Legacy of Craftsmanship – Now in Its Second Generation

It was during these early years that Reginald’s son, Chris, began accompanying him on job sites and estimates. What started as tagging along with Dad soon revealed Chris’s natural ability in fence building. In time, Chris joined the business full-time and began building a legacy of his own.

Now operating out of San Diego County, Chris has continued the family tradition and expanded the company’s footprint, serving clients from El Cajon to Ocean Beach, and everywhere in between. Chris and his wife have three children—Zack, Nick, and Allison—who may someday become the third generation of Smith Fence.

We believe in building every fence as if it were for our own backyard. That’s why we use only premium materials and trusted brands. All wood for our Dog-Eared Cedar, Board-on-Board, Cap & Trim, and Cap & Trim with Lattice fences comes from Master Halco and J&W Lumber—two trusted suppliers serving Southern California for over 50 years.

For chain link fencing, we source from Master Halco and Builders Fence Company, both known for their durability and reputation.

Our Construction Standards

At Smith Fence Company, we don’t cut corners. Every wood fence we install includes PostMaster steel posts, screws for frame attachment, and ring-shank coil nails—not staples. That’s right: absolutely no staples. This ensures strength, safety, and long-term durability.

Our chain link fences are fabricated from galvanized steel for rust resistance and low maintenance—ideal for families, pets, and commercial needs across La Mesa, Santee, and Mira Mesa.
